This week, there were several reports of a wild wolf pack roaming freely around the lake formerly called “Calhoun”. This led many residents of the Lake Bde Maka Saka Ska neighborhood to call the one police officer left in Minneapolis to complain of loud noises they hear from the safety of their homes. Governor Walz’ recent lockdown has left the area void of human activity.
Wild wolves once roamed the area back when Native Americans ruled the area. It’s part of their historic range. But in 1830, then vice president John C. Calhoun traded 12 beaver pelts to the tribe for the area and quickly hunted down the wild beasts. Upon his death in 1850, the lake was named after Calhoun in honor of his eradication of the wolves.
The Lake Bde Maka Saka Ska area is commonly visited by night prowling cougars, but Walz’ shutdown of bars led to a sudden disappearance of those dangerous creatures. Many people speculate they’ve crossed into Wisconsin where there are fruitful hunting grounds of young male prey.
